In order to walk, a toddler must trust. She is compelled by her desire to propel herself forward through space. Crawling, scooting and eventually standing shakily are all steps of the process of learning to walk. There are inevitable spills , hesitations and bumps along the way to the confident stride, the hopping, skipping, running , jumping exuberance of childhood. The trust that is needed for this tremendous accomplishment, in no time taken for granted, seems to turn on from an inner switch. It overrides the fear of falling and gets her back on her feet. By the time we reach adulthood the process of reaching milestones- whether material,emotional or spiritual- can be daunting. Our childlike trust has often been replaced with anxiety, self-doubt, suspicion and soul-weariness. For me, remembering how far I've come helps to ease the ache of impatience. Manifesting goals and dreams takes time, focus, clarity and intention. And mistakes. We may fall down after stumbling but we must get back up. As toddlers it never occurred to us that we would not walk. We had every intention of getting up on our feet and, barring neurological or physical disability, we did. The process, the path was necessary to arrive at the end goal of walking. It remains true even now with whatever our goals may be. We don't have to know how many times we may falter, trip and fall. When we have faith in ourselves and trust the process, we only have to know that we will keep going.That we will take every step necessary on the path. Going where we want to go, doing what we want to do, being who we want to be...
